Slideluck comes to TO

by Heather on May 15, 2008

I’ve mentioned Slideluck Potshow before here but in case you’ve forgotten:

Slideluck Potshow is a slideshow and a potluck to which members of the arts and photography communities bring food, drink, and submit a maximum of 5 minutes worth of slides. The evening begins with a couple hours of dining on the home-cooked delights of participants, while drinking and mingling. Following the potluck, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow commences. The potluck begins at 7pm and the slideshow begins at 9:30pm and ends at 11:30pm with one intermission.

SLPS is now happening in cities all over the world- they expect to produce 100 events in 2008 and the most recent show in NYC attracted 1500 people and some stellar shooters (Jill Greenberg, Edward Burtynsky).

The Deets:

Saturday, May 24th at 7pm
St. Stephen’s Church
103 Bellevue Avenue at College St.

Stay tuned. I’ll update the venue when it’s confirmed.

But there can be no Slideluck without the Potshow. So, rifle through those recipes and get busy. I got this request for help from organizer Casey Kelbaugh. Clearly there’s lots to do:

SPREAD THE WORD: Invite everyone you know in the creative industry and friends of the arts. We just made a Facebook invite that can be really effective. Postings on other arts blogs (thanks, Heather!) and message boards are also helpful.

- FIND ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE: It will be great exposure. Would be great to get in a good range of work, both from established people and up-and-coming emerging talent. The soft deadline for submissions is Wednesday the 21st, so it’s pretty soon. Shows are generally 15-30 images and it’s best if they have the same feel or come from the same project.

- LOCAL SPONSORSHIPS: If possible! Even modest sponsorships can help to cover expenses, such as: projector and screen, paper plates, forks, spoons, cups, napkins, paper towels, garbage bags, serving utensils, cleaning. Maybe photo supply stores, schools, etc.

- VOLUNTEERS: For the night of. It really helps to have half a dozen people keeping the food area clean, greeting people at the door, helping with set up and clean up. It’s nice if we have enough people to break the night into shifts. Any photo assistants, interns, students, siblings, etc. usually enjoy being involved.

– AFTERPARTY: Since our location is so central I’m hoping this isn’t going to be a problem. We usually just make a deal with a nearby bar/club/lounge. We tell them that they will see 50-100 of us around midnight and we try to negotiate easy entrance, perhaps our own space, and possible drink specials. We try to keep it simple and not an over-commitment.

- SLIDESHOW PRODUCTION- Perhaps the most important job, especially for the future of SLPS Toronto, is the person who will work closely with our Producer and Co-Director, Alys Kenny to process submissions and build the actual slideshow. This is perhaps the biggest job, but the most rewarding. Being comfortable on a Mac is pretty important. If you are a photo-enthusiast, etc, that might want to take this on, please let us know!

Update: I just talked with Casey and he says he’s already received some great submissions but is still lacking production and volunteer help. This is a collective effort so pitch in however you can. I think the coolest thing about this project is that Casey and partner Alys approach the first SLPS in each city as a launch of something that becomes an integral part of the photo community. In order to sustain the event, they need good people who will have the interest and passion to carry it on. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the our community’s development.

So, if you are interested in getting involved, email Alys: alys@slideluckpotshow.com. And check out the Facebook group and the new SLPS online network here.
