After years of questionable relevancy, CAPIC is suddenly showing signs that it really wants to serve it’s constituents by hosting truly pertinent events.
I trace this back to the No Uncertain Terms event of last January which introduced Toronto audiences (and the rest of the country through the miracle of webcasting) to the PLUS Initiative. And I also must give CAPIC major props for bringing Chase Jarvis to town last week.
Though I had a blast drinking with my buds at the ADCC and posing with clever rep Lisa Bonnici who brought along her own photobooth to the event…
…I also caught half of Chase’s talk last Thursday night. Say what you want, Chase Jarvis is cutting a wide path through the jungle that is social media and his clients are loving it. If you haven’t yet drank the CJ koolaid, I think you may want to at least take a sip.
And CAPIC’s Toronto chapter has asked Yours Truly to be a part of another fantastic night they are hosting this week. A monthly happening, Xchange is described like this:
Every month the Toronto Chapter will hosts this exclusive event as a flashpoint to find out what’s going on and what’s being talked about from the best in the biz. The Xchange series will focuses on current topics, that are relevant to professionals throughout the industry, and key partners are involved at every step.
This month’s event, “Speed Dating an Art Director” is just as wacky as it sounds:
The Goods:
This Wednesday, November 18. Doors open at 7 pm. Attendees will be asked sign up upon arriving to the venue. “Dating” starts at 7:30 with each participant having 3 back to back dates lasting 5 minutes each with 3 different art directors; a round (3 back to back dates) will last about 20 minutes. At the end of each round there will be 5 minute break. Some art directors will be rotated in or out at the end of each round. There will be 4 rounds which will take about two hours to complete, once breaks and changes-over are taken into account.
Here’s a partial list of our Portfolio Reviewers:
Heather Morton – HMAb, Freelance Art Buyer
Bree Seeley – Walrus Magazine
David Kenyon – Creative Director – Draft/FCB
Paul Fleming – Creative Director – Organic
Richard Carmichael – Creative Director – Just Be Frank – Ad agency
Dominic Ayre – Art Director – Hambly Woolley
Sandy Kim – Art DirectorThe Xchange is a FREE event and open to all in the industry.
What? Guaranteed time with a bunch of real live decision makers? And all you have to do is show up? We all know how hard it is to get face time with one Art Director, let alone 3.
Whoot Whoot CAPIC! Keep up the good work.

Very jealous that this is not where I am…or that I am not where this is.
I attended the Chase Jarvis event last week and it was fantastic to see such a great turnout especially since it was not a freebie. It was a fun and informative event that really inspired! I wish more of the heavy hitters in the biz (ie: big name established photographers) would join CAPIC if only to add their endorsement and support to this great organization. CAPIC has helped many photographers and illustrators understand good business practices and encouraged them to embrace a more open dialogue with each other and participate in the community at large.
Thanks Heather for your participation in the upcoming event and getting it out here via your blog, and come on you guys, you know who you are, join CAPIC and lend your support and expertise.
I’ve been a CAPIC member for a few years now. I am one of TWO members working in Winnipeg! I’ve gotten involved on the the goings on in the Prairie chapter, with hopes of bringing this type of community to our icy berg. Ironically, in a small market like Winnipeg, we’re even LESS likely to band together. I can only dream of events like this coming to Winnipeg!
Heather, Lisa….those last two pics are serious gangsta! Wut wut!
CAPIC has been working hard for the past few years on producing great programming. I know how hard the CAPIC leaders work, as I’ve lectured in Toronto, Montreal, Van Couver and Calgary . The CAPIC leaders and volunteers work extremely hard…I love my Canadian neighbors, and am grateful for their commitment to education and growth!
