Big News

Wow- check this out, I’m now blogging for Westside Studio!

I know- crazy! But crazy good because Westside represents some of the best shooters anywhere and I’m tickled that they’ve entrusted their Social Media Management to Moi!

So, check in at Westside’s blog often for all the good attitude and info that you’ve come to expect from HMAb.

The lucky and talented Derek Shapton (who’s new blog is also fantastic) got to take my official Westside portrait. Here’s a snappy outtake:

I know- glasses! The fun never stops over there!

I think the real bonus here is the great new headshot!

I love the smile!

Does this mean that the last two posts you did on Westside photographers, Monk and Shapton were part of your contract with them….This forum is now biased

me June 6, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I would have hoped that you would have responded to my last comment or at least commented. I have followed you and feel that I must advise you to see Bill Cunningham’s New York. You now belong to Westside and what credibility you had is gone.

I’m liking planet shapton. second best is better then never moving forward.
Congrats Heather. I know it will be good.

Thanks everyone- except “me”. Why the rancor me? And why the anonymity? To answer your question- no bias with Russell and Derek. I actually wasn’t working for Westside when I posted about them (except this post of course, which shows Derek’s work via my portrait).

Anyway, thanks for reading, sorry to lose you “me”. I didn’t realize my credibility was so tenuous. Question for you: did you ever donate money while I had my paypal button on this site? No? OK well I can only give away free “credibility” for so long before I needs to get paid. Westside is doing that.

And for the rest of you who may think I have done YOU a disservice by taking a paying gig- feel free to get in touch, pledge money to this blog and I will gladly re-instate it. Seriously, I will. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

me June 21, 2011 at 3:07 pm

ANONYMITY BECAUSE THE INDUSTRY IN TORONTO AND CANADA IS VERY SMALL. ANY FAULT AND MISUNDERSTANDING CAN LEAD TO TENUOUS RESULTS. YOU CAN NOT DENY THAT IN THE PAST YOU REALLY HAVE NOT TALKED ABOUT WESTSIDE THAT MUCH AND SUDDENLY TWO POSTS IN A ROW. AS FOR DONATING, YES I DID. I LIKE YOU PERSONALLY BUT FEEL THAT THIS IS A FORM OF DOUBLE DIPPING, AND IF YOU ARE PROMOTING GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY WE HAVE TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE WORKING INDEPENDENTLY, WITHOUT BIAS. AS BILL CUNNINGHAM SAYS, “ONCE YOU TAKE THEIR MONEY, THEY CAN TELL YOU WHAT TO DO.”

Dear me.

Grow up.

Love…

Dan

P.S.: me is not me as in I, its the above me. And btw, nothing makes you more easily dismissed than the overuse of the Caps Lock. Just a thought.
P.P.S.: That was fun to write. Hehehehe…
P.P.P.S: Congrats Heather!!!! Hope things are good at Westside! We’ll miss you!

What really works is the all caps approach. Really does.

peter schafrick July 28, 2011 at 7:34 pm

CAPS OR NOT… he makes a good point.

If you read back through the archives of this blog Heather has provided an unbelievable amount of important industry insight and the nature of her blog is to share her knowledge and experience in order to help people making their run at success.

You can’t blame her one bit for taking a paying gig. A bunch of “thank you for the advice, Heather” replies don’t pay the rent or utilities. I personally learned a ton from watching her videos about photographer promo cards. I never knew there was a donate button but I’m going right now to see if their is and donate something I can afford as a thank you to her and I hope her all the best in her new gig. Thanks for taking the time to share will all of us, Heather!

So we have established that yelling in an acceptable form of communication – thanks for reiterating that there Peter – reminding us once again that the world is full of web newbies. And that because she is blogging for WS she is now somehow double dipping despite the fact this blog has not been updated since she was hired. Remind me not to start a blog so I can never work again.
And correct me if I am wrong but at no point in this blog’s history has HMaB ever been about directly representing photographers. It has always been a discussion about photography in Toronto. Despite ME and Peter’s belief that anonymity is the only way to get ahead in Toronto I would say if you had a civil response that added to the discussion instead of just the expected doom and gloom reply one day you may actual feel you don’t have to remain anonymous.

ME October 12, 2011 at 10:28 pm

Really. Daniel, the only comment you have is “caps”. REALLY!
Once a client hires you, they do dictate how you shoot.

Steve. I am not blaming her for taking a paying gig. Not a problem. Just don’t use this forum to promote without first divulging that is it a solicited comment.

Myles. I do add to the conversation, and take the time to advise the young ones. Remaining anonymous really does not change the qualifying aspect of my comment.

Really folks, let concentrate on the issues instead of looking at the little things; CAPS or not, the issue stands.

Heather October 17, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Hold on ME, so you think I was promoting Westside when I was working there and not being transparent here? I thought I answered this paranoid “qualifying comment” above. And sorry, what is the deep seated “issue” you are illuminating for us? My conflict of interest? Thanks for adding to the conversation that I’ve tried hard to cultivate over the years with such drivel. Does this level of discourse help our industry OR make me want to return to blogging? Neither.

myles October 21, 2011 at 1:28 pm

What is the issue? You have accused someone of not being transparent without any proof. You have called someone out for not having credibility, in essence an attack of character, because a headshot was taken by a photographer of a studio she was briefly blogging for. All this despite the fact this blog was not updated at all while working there. I too would remain anonymous making such rash accusations.

So now that Heather is no longer with WS how does Bill’s quote stand up to your litmus test of transparency given that she did not post here while working there? I am sure you can spin it into some awesome conspiracy. Have a go!
